Cartozoology n. The science or practice of discovering and studying animals outlined paradigmatically by street layouts as they appear on maps, especially with reference to physical evidence of the animals’ presence in the corresponding terrain.

The Society of Friends of Cartozoology is open to anyone who meets the admission criteria (see below), who shows a true cartozoological disposition in their life and work and who pays the membership fee of NOK 20,50. He or she who wishes to apply for membership in the society must include in their application an example of an animal, bird or fish - living or extinct - real or imaginary - which the applicant, unaided, has discovered on a map of a city, town or suburaban area, and has, unaided, sketched onto the aformentioned map in such a way as descibed below:

  1. The animal should emerge - visible to anyone by drawing along the streets that make out the animal's body.

  2. The animal should cohere.

  3. The animal must be shown in three phases: a) As not visible (an untouched map), b) As clearly drawn and c) As a cutting

Material received by the Society will not be returned. The Cartozoological Society of Norway reserves the right to publish submitted discoveries. (In such cases thhe contributor will always be credited.)
